Sir,

With reference to Sir Henry Blake's Despatches No.247 of the 8th July and No.471 of 18th November, 1901, regarding the grant of exemption from rates and taxes to Military Officers who occupy rateable tenements, I have the honour to inform you that the Military Authorities have sent in to this Government the usual Return of tenements which have hitherto been subject to such exemption, with a view to the grant of the privilege for the first quarter of this year.

2. Pending your decision on the question as to whether such exemption is to be granted in future or not, I have issued instructions that it is to be provisionally granted in the meantime as heretofore, on the strict understanding that the amount will be refunded in full to the Colonial Government in the event of your deciding that exemption is not to be granted beyond December 31st, 1901.

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your most obedient

Humble servant,

My. Gascoine

Major-General, Administering the Government.
